Why My Practice Is Insurance-Free

Insurance typically reimburses therapists at rates comparable to intern-level pay. This often requires less time focused directly on client care. Insurance companies may also change payment criteria without notice, and therapists must comply with these changes in order to be paid. Additionally, insurers are known to audit records well after services are provided, sometimes applying revised criteria—such as how long someone must meet diagnostic thresholds—without adequately accounting for environmental factors that can prolong distress.

To offset low reimbursement rates and the unpredictability of payment, many insurance-based therapists must take on a high volume of clients. This often results in less time, energy, and individualized attention available per person.

By practicing insurance-free, I’m able to spend more time, energy, and focus on your care—preparing thoughtfully for our work together, staying up to date on relevant research and effective treatment approaches that fit you, and finding or creating helpful resources tailored to your needs. You are not just a number here.

  • Frequency: Based on research, initially, weekly sessions at least are important to build traction until the goals of the new ways of handling things are maintained for three consecutive weeks.

  • Intensives can produce months of work within a few days, cutting out weekly updates, check-ins, wind-down, allowing more concentrated focus, faster results, and fewer sessions overall.

  • I accept debit, credit, and HSA/FSA (health savings account) cards, with my autopay system automatically taking care of payment after each session.

Benefits of Therapy Without Insurance

  • Permanent Medical Record: Insurance requires a mental health diagnosis, which goes onto your permanent medical record.

  • Freedom of Choice: You have the freedom to choose the therapist that best suits your needs without being limited by insurance networks.

  • Flexible Options: Customize session frequency, length, therapy type, and who participates in your sessions.

  • Confidentiality: Your diagnosis and session details remain confidential, without third-party access.

  • No Pre-Existing Barriers: Avoid additional costs and pre-existing condition concerns often associated with insurance.

  • Addressing Non-Psychiatric Issues: Therapy can help with non-diagnosable issues, such as improving communication skills or coping with job-related stress, which may not be covered by insurance.

  • No Diagnosis Required: Insurance usually mandates a qualifying diagnosis, even for self-growth and life stressors.

  • Personalized Treatment: We work together to determine session frequency and length, tailored to your specific needs, rather than being bound by insurance company regulations.

  • Protection from Increasing Clawbacks: Insurance companies are increasingly initiating clawbacks, which can be financially devastating for both therapists and clients. They "back claw" payments up to 2 years of already rendered care.

Although this does not pertain to my practice, as I am not an emergency care provider and am not in-network with insurance, the law requires all medical providers to include this information.
